The Emergency Unit at Tishk International University provides immediate and professional first aid support on campus. Our mission is to ensure the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff through rapid response, professional medical care, and timely referral to hospitals when needed.

Our Purpose

The Emergency Unit exists to provide immediate first aid and emergency medical response. We stabilize patients before hospital transfer if necessary. We also work to promote a safe and healthy campus environment and educate the university community on basic life support.

Services We Provide

Our certified team handles a wide range of non-critical and urgent medical situations on campus. These include first aid for minor injuries, blood sugar measurement, and vital signs monitoring such as blood pressure and temperature. We also provide wound dressing, IV fluids for dehydration, and care for falls, vertigo, and dizziness. In cases where a patient is unconscious, we provide initial stabilization.

Cases Referred to Hospitals

For the safety of our patients, certain cases are immediately referred to partner hospitals for advanced care. These include severe trauma or multiple injuries, critical conditions requiring ICU admission, cardiac emergencies or stroke symptoms, specialized diseases beyond campus capacity, and cases requiring advanced diagnostic imaging such as CT or MRI scans.

Certifications and Standards

Our team is trained according to international first aid standards. These include NZQA 6400 for emergency first aid management, NZQA 6401 for general first aid provision, and NZQA 6402 for basic life support and bleeding management. All staff members are certified in ACLS or BLS by the American Heart Association.

Admission Process

When you visit the Emergency Unit, we follow a standard procedure. This includes an initial assessment and triage by a nurse, a brief case evaluation and medical history check, admission to the emergency bay, monitoring of vital signs, and finally documentation in a digital medical record.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Emergency Unit is available to all TIU students, faculty, and staff members. In a serious emergency, we stabilize the patient and coordinate immediate transfer to a partner hospital with ambulance services. Patients are transferred if their condition exceeds our campus capacity, requires surgery, ICU care, or advanced diagnostics. Basic first aid and emergency assessment are free for university members, though some supplies or ambulance transfers may involve external costs. You can walk in without an appointment during working hours. For after-hours emergencies, please contact Campus Security first.
